Our Background

Thank you for being interested and taking the time to find out about the initial idea behind MuchLoved and our motivations for setting up the organization. Below we have outlined for you a short summary of how it all developed:

The initial motivation - Jonathan Davies

“In the mid and late 1990’s I lost both my brother and mother in quick succession. My brother’s death was in particular sudden, unexpected and overwhelming in shock. I was keen to create some sort of online memorial to him, a legacy that could show many of his happy years and make it easy for his school and university friends in particular to view, make contact and to maybe help develop by sending in pictures and thoughts of their own. There was no appropriate service available at the time and after some research I felt that the technology and cost to create myself the type of tribute I wanted was prohibitive. I was also very preoccupied emotionally with my own grieving and sense of loss and also felt that people in general were maybe not yet ready for embracing the idea of an online memorial. My life eventually started to move on again, with marriage and children, but the idea did not go away. In March 2000 I registered the domain name MuchLoved.com and a couple of years later actively started to meet with my friend and computer programmer Andy Daniels to discuss making the idea a reality”

Founding Partner - Andrew Daniels

“I had always been excited that this was not only an idea slightly ahead of its time, but that it was such a personal and worthwhile one. Neither of us quite remembers when exactly we finally decided that we should go for it, but one day we did! We knew that to create a service that really had a positive impact it had to focus on the needs of the bereaved person wanting to set up the site and their motivation to express many things from grief and anger through to commemoration and pride. It followed that this had to be a charitable organization and that it would be a means of helping people, rather than making profits. We then set to work developing the architecture of the site and how it would function and underpin the service, a task that seemed to expand the more we worked on it. By 2005 we needed further assistance to implement the computing technology and website design required and so we interviewed and found additional like-minded partners who then worked tirelessly with us to complete the project by the end of 2006. After some deep breaths during our final testing before going live, it is no exaggeration to say that the day MuchLoved was at last ready was a day I will never forget.”
