Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer - seeking a vaccine
Against Breast Cancer is a registered charity dedicated to research into breast cancer in order to improve detection and survival. As you are probably aware, breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer in the UK with a staggering 1 in 8, that’s 130 women a day, developing the disease.
Our scientists, based at Westminster College London, are leading an innovative programme which analyses how the cancer cell, patients' natural resistance and their environment interact. Our unique Diet & Lifestyle Study, working with women who already have breast cancer to find ways to maximise their survival, is taking place in 50 hospitals across the UK.
Our commitment to finding a vaccine against breast cancer needs more vital resources to help realise our dream of a future free of breast cancer - as soon as possible. ..
Our biochemists have already identified complex sugars which coat breast cancer cells and are associated with their ability to travel. This could lead us to a blood and urine test to screen for these destructive cells.
The research team is identifying cancer ‘markers’ so that they can start developing new antibody therapies. These ‘magic bullets’ will target specific breast cancers and, based on this work, a vaccine could be developed.
“The value of your support, in memory of someone special, cannot be underestimated at this stage in our work.” Dr Miriam Dwek, Head of Against Breast Cancer Research
