Bowel & Cancer Research
Conducting research into bowel cancer and related bowel diseases
Bowel & Cancer Research's vision is that no-one should die of bowel cancer or be compelled to live with a stoma (colostomy or ileostomy).
We run two research programmes:
1. Saving Lives focuses on improving survival rates for bowel cancer sufferers through pioneering research into the spread and behaviour of this cancer in specific at-risk populations.
2. Changing Lives investigates the causes, effects and treatment of bowel disorders other than cancer which are currently poorly understood.
Uniquely, we place an additional emphasis on surgical innovation, aiming to significantly improve/protect quality of life - in particular to eliminate the need for anyone to have to rely upon a stoma.
Embedded within the Centre for Academic Surgery at the Royal London Hospital, Bowel & Cancer Research maintains a specialist Colorectal Cancer Laboratory housing state-of-the-art molecular technology. The hospital itself, and the Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences, as part of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) School of Medicine and Dentistry, have established global reputations as centres of excellence in the field of bowel disorders. Relevant too, is a focus upon stem cell biology, which has the potential to have a significant future impact on bowel cancer and other bowel conditions.
