With more than 60 years' experience, CARE's programmes are grounded in an extraordinarily in-depth understanding of how poverty keeps people trapped from one generation to the next. And because we're a pioneering organisation, we've constantly improved our work and increased our impact over the years.
We tackle the deep-seated causes of poverty, not just the consequences. For example, we help people to start small businesses and farmers to grow and sell their own food. Changing people's lives also means changing the world around them - so we work in partnership with businesses and governments all over the world to help them to tackle poverty.
When disaster strikes, we are one of the first to respond - and we're recognised for our rapid response to emergencies. We make sure that aid gets to where it is needed most. We can do this because we've often been working in countries for many years. And we put money where it is needed most: more than 90 pence in every pound donated goes directly overseas. That's one of the highest rates among all UK aid agencies.
More than 13,000 people work for CARE worldwide and we have a strong local presence. More than 90 per cent of our staff are from the country where they work so we have an in-depth knowledge of local issues, culture and languages.
