Child Bereavement Trust

Supporting those working with families in loss and grief

The Child Bereavement Trust was founded in September 1994 by Jenni Thomas. The work of the Charity was then launched and established by Jenni as Director and Julia Samuel as Founder Patron.

The work that the CBT does originated from a reaction to practice in the early 1960's when families were not encouraged to be with their sick babies or children when admitted to hospitals in the UK. A number of people working in hospitals started to recognise the negative impact of this practice and that in fact babies and children needed their parents, particularly when they were in an unfamiliar hospital environment.

The philosophy of the CBT is based on learning from families who have experienced the death of a baby or child or from children who have experienced the death of their mother or father, brother or sister. They share and encourage best practice in training and in supporting professionals and all those working with families in loss and grief. They also devise resources for children and families who are grieving as well as the professionals who support them.

The charity is now led by Ann Chalmers as Chief Executive, working closely with the Founder and President, Jenni Thomas OBE. Both Ann and Jenni work as trainers and facilitators for the Charity and continue to learn through their work as trained bereavement counsellors within the NHS and in other areas such as schools and the emergency services.
