Children in Crisis

Education, protection and healthcare for the worlds most vunerable children.

The charity was established in 1993 by the Duchess of York, following a visit to the Haven in Poland. Over the years, Children in Crisis has grown to help over 250,000 children annually in 10 countries around the world. The Charity continues to make its contribution to reach the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Today, Children in Crisis works in partnership with local communities to provide educational opportunities as a route out of poverty for the world's most vulnerable children and their families.

Worldwide, one in six children do not have access to an education. Children in Crisis is working to change this. With the help of our supporters we are able to offer these children hope for a better future and the opportunity to live positive healthy lives.

We currently operate in 10 countries, working with local communities to meet the needs of children in the most effective way.
- In Africa and Asia we support local organisations to develop education programmes which meet the needs of children and their communities through training teachers, supporting classes for out of school children; training in basic health messages and building and equipping schools.
- In Europe, there is a need for drugs education, particularly for children living in societies in which drug and alcohol misuse is common. We work with these children to ensure that they have the information and skills needed to make positive, informed decisions about their own lives.
- In Afghanistan, our Karte Char Day Care Centre in Kabul provides an education, a nutritious meal and healthcare to 450 children each year. Our re-unification programme has helped over 300 children and our Street Working Children's Programme has helped. In addition, our teacher training programme has reached 170,000 children
- In East Timor, we have built 15 schools and are currently training 400 teachers to improve education for over 13,000 children
- In the nomadic communities of Western China we have trained 50 women in basic health and midwifery, helping 15,000 people
- In Sierra Leone, we have trained 300 primary school teachers to teach 22,000 children about the dangers or HIV / AIDS. We have also built 15 schools
- In DRC and Liberia we are developing teacher training and school building programmes
