The Lake District has inspired visitors for centuries - the fells, lakes, rivers and woodlands, the opportunities for recreation it provides and the culture which it supports. Since 1934, Friends of the Lake District has worked to protect and enhance these distinctive qualities. We campaigned for the creation of the Lake District National Park in 1951 and remain the only charity solely committed to safeguarding this precious landscape.
Since 1978 we have represented the Campaign to Protect Rural England in the Lake District and wider Cumbria, helping rural communities to recognise the value of their environment and working to ensure that development respects the special qualities of the landscape.
Help us to ensure that Cumbria and the Lake District remains a special place in people's hearts by contributing towards our work, which includes:
- Promoting sustainability in the county
- Enhancing the countryside by owning and managing land
- Contributing towards work to preventing and repairing damage to footpaths on the fells
- Supporting communities with grants to help keep villages thriving
- Sharing with people the special qualities of Cumbria and the Lake District through events and activities
If you share our belief that Cumbria and the Lake District is worth protecting for the future, then please support us with a gift which lasts forever.
