Grief Encounter

Helping children through bereavement.

Grief Encounter believes that every bereaved child and their family in the UK should get the best possible help, recognition and understanding following their loss. They dedicate themselves, with the help of others, to making a difference to those children whose lives will never be the same.

Grief Encounter was founded by Shelley Gilbert who has many years experience as a bereavement counsellor and who has personal insight into the issues facing bereaved children having lost both her parents when she was very young.

They have created a workbook project for bereaved children aged from about 5 years upward in order to encourage conversations about loss between children and adults. The workbook aims to dispel some of the myths around “acceptance” and “moving on”, encourage the sharing of feelings, help families make some sense of the confusions and to achieve a balance between facing reality and ‘getting on with it’. In particular, it helps to give the child space and permission to grieve.

Grief Encounter works with schools nationwide and also helps children and their families through direct contact and via their website.
