The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the only UK charity focusing on all muscle diseases. More than 30,000 people in the UK have muscular dystrophy or a related muscle disease, while a further 150,000 people are indirectly affected as relatives or carers.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign has pioneered the search for treatments and cures for over 47 years and provides practical, medical and emotional support to people affected by the condition, and campaigns to increase Government research spending.
There are over 60 different types of muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions. These conditions cause the gradual and relentless wasting and weakening of muscles. Conditions are either inherited or acquired and can affect babies, young people and adults of any race.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign provides a range of support and care services through MDC Care Advisors, who are based at clinics around the UK and are on hand to give advice and support to people who are affected by muscle disease, as well as through muscle centres and a dedicated Information Service.
The charity is a leading funder of research into muscle disease. Work is ongoing to help identify the genes responsible, improve understanding of the diseases and search for potential cures and treatments. The organisation is an integral part of world-wide research into muscle disorders and is a significant contributor to breakthroughs that take place around the world.
