Meningitis UK's sole focus is to find a vaccine to eradicate meningitis.
In most cases meningitis strikes so quickly that there is little time to realise something is seriously wrong. The disease is also often incredibly difficult to detect as the symptoms are hard to distinguish from the common cold or flu, plus there are occasions when people show no or very few symptoms. For these reasons, we believe that the only way to eradicate the disease completely is through the development of a preventative vaccine.
Sadly, there is still no vaccine available to protect against all forms of meningitis including the most common form in the UK - Meningitis B which causes almost 90% of all cases. Our scientists believe that, with enough support, a vaccine can be developed within the next 7-10 years, which is why we have launched the 'Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign' to raise £7 million over the next seven years to fund the research needed to reach this goal. Obviously, the more support we get, the sooner a vaccine can be developed and the more lives we will be able to save.
