S.C.A.R.D
Support & Care After Road Death & Injury
SCARD was founded by Carole Whittingham whose son Steven was killed in 1992 after being hit by a stolen car speeding at 80mph in a 30mph area.
Very soon after his death she identified a need for a supporting system where people who had suffered a similar bereavement could help to support each other and in the summer of 1993 a telephone help-line was set up.
In 1999, the organization was named S.C.A.R.D after a group of bereaved and injured met together. Members thought the name was appropriate because that was just how they felt after losing a loved one in such a violent way.
SCARD provides emotional and practical support through their telephone help-line, support groups, meetings and a personal support system. It also helps affected families deal with the judicial system and accessing legal help as well as trauma and bereavement counselling.
SCARD also campaigns to improve general awareness in society of road danger by providing information and through education.
