Shelter
We believe that everyone should have a home
For more than forty years, ever since the film 'Cathy Come Home' created a wave of public indignation about the human cost of homelessness, Shelter has been working to give everyone in Britain the most basic right of all - to live in a decent, safe, and affordable home.
Here is some of the vital work we do:
Free housing advice helpline
Our helpline gives free, confidential and expert advice to thousands of people with housing problems every year - and prevents many people becoming homeless
Housing advice centres
Our national network of centres provide information, advice and support to anyone in housing need. Our advisers let people know their rights, explain their options and can help prevent eviction or repossession
Support services
Shelter runs a number of projects tailored to specific needs. For example, our children's service supports children in temporary housing; our families projects help families make the transition from homelessness to a settled home; and we run a tenancy support scheme for older people.
Campaigning
Shelter campaigns hard to keep homelessness and bad housing at the forefront of the political agenda. We pressurise the Government for lasting solutions to the housing crisis and for investment in decent affordable homes for all.
