World Jewish Relief (WJR)
A Jewish Lifeline Worldwide
In 1933, WJR began life as the Central British Fund (CBF) for German Jewry. Our critical role was to rescue Jews from the horrors ocurring in Nazi Germany with over 70,000 given refuge in the UK before WWII. We also critically initiated and funded the Kindertransport which brought 10,000 children (predominantly Jewish) to safety in Britain in 1938-39.
Since then, we have provided support to communities in over 32 countries around the world including Aden, Algeria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Iran, Iraq, Ethiopia and Egypt. And when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, CBF was there to provide vital support to more than two million poverty stricken Jews who remained in the region.
To reflect the global nature of our work, we changed our name from CBF to World Jewish Relief in 1994. And in 2007, with the full integration of World Jewish Aid, we emerged as the leading overseas aid charity for the UK Jewish community.
Today, WJR continues to provide humanitarian aid and support primarily, but not exclusively, to Jewish people in need throughout the world. Our aim is to fight human suffering and provide communities with the foundations and tools that will help them to flourish once again.
